What is a Champ Pack?
The culminating event of each year's Destination Imagination season is Global Finals, which brings together teams from all over the world in a multi-day celebration of creativity. The top teams from the New York Affiliate Tournament (our State Finals) are invited to represent our state as Team New York.
The Champ Pack is our Team New York regalia. There's a tee-shirt which is our uniform, and there are pins that are also part of the pack.
Frequently Asked Questions about Champ Packs
Q: My team is participating at the New York Affiliate Tournament. Do I need to place a pre-order now? If so, why?
A: Yes, you do — and please do it ASAP! We want to make sure that we have your order ready for you at the Affiliate Tournament, so that you can pick it up there if your team wins! Shipping / postage is expensive, especially for heavy items like pins and bulky items like shirts, so we'd rather hand them to you in person.
Q: When will we receive our Champ Packs?
A: If your team wins (1st or 2nd place) at the Affiliate Tournament, they will be called up to receive their medals. Once they have their medals in hand, the Team Manager (alone) should go to the announced location to pick up the Champ Pack. If you have ordered shirts / pins even if you are not advancing, you can pick them up at the end of the Awards Ceremony.
Q: Can we order shirts no matter what, and pins only if we advance, or some other complex combination?
A: Yes, those options are presented in the Champ Pack & Pins Pre-Order Form. If your need is more complex than the form permits, please send us an email explaining in detail what you want.
Q: What does it cost?
A: The basic (minimal) champ pack costs $36 per team member, and includes one of each kind of this year's NYDI trading pins, and a Team NY shirt. We throw in 2 free Team NY shirts for the Team Managers. If team members, supporters, extra TMs, etc. want more shirts or pins, the cost is listed in the Champ Pack & Pins Pre-Order Form. Once you have completed the form, we will send you an email within 48 hours telling you what you will owe if your team advances, or does not.
Q: Why would I want to buy extra pins beyond the basic Champ Pack?
A: Most kids want to have a set of NY pins for themselves (to keep as a souvenir), but they also want to be able to trade with teams from other states and countries. I usually suggest purchasing at least 2 extras of each set to make that possible. Of course, there are also kids (and adult supporters) who want lots of pins to trade - and that's why we also offer the larger bulk / discount packs.
Q: When do we need to pay?
A: You must pay for your items in full when you pick them up at the tournament.
Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: We accept cash, checks, credit cards, Apple Pay, and gPay / Google Wallet. We can split payment across two cards only if absolutely necessary. Please don't ask us to run separate charges for each team member — as this multiplies the processing fees charged by our credit card processor.
Q: How should we collect the orders, and the money for this from our team?
A: You should survey your team now on what they want to order, and use that information to complete the Pre-Order Form. Then make arrangements with your team on how to transfer funds to you to make the purchase. Cash is king, and checks are low-tech goodness — but services like Zelle, Venmo, etc. make this much easier.
Q: Will we be able to buy pins at Global Finals if we change our mind, want to order more, or run out of pins to trade?
A: Yes, you can, but (a) they will be more expensive, and (b) supply may be limited, as there will not be time to order more pins from our supplier.
Q: What do you do with the money that NYDI collects selling pins and shirts?
A: We sell pins to Team NY at a very modest profit. Proceeds support the NYDI's operations, and are often used to enable teams that are less financially fortunate to participate in our program.
